In common with many medieval villages throughout Glamorgan, Cosmeston appears to have reached it’s zenith during the late Thirteenth to early Fourteenth Centuries. The combined effects of colder climate, bad harvests, famine and the Black Death during the middle of the Fourteenth Century hit Cosmeston hard; these events and the effects of the rebellion of Owen Glyndwr decimated medieval Cosmeston.
Near to the reconstructed Medieval village is Lower Cosmeston Farm, which for all intent and purpose appears to be little more than a generic 19th Century farm complex which are ubiquitous throughout Glamorgan; beneath the Victorian facade of Lower Cosmeston Farm however there is concealed within the later fabric the remains of an earlier building; a substantial two storied Post Medieval house dating to the 17th Century. Although sadly mutilated Lower Cosmeston farm house constitutes Cosmeston’s oldest surviving house and is an important and interesting survival.
Finds included both local and imported pottery dating from the 17th th Centuries, buttons, coins, one in particular being a worn coin of Elizabeth I, indicating that any surviving medieval buildings at Cosmeston were robbed of their stone during the Post Medieval period. It is highly likely that stone from the medieval houses was used to construct the farmhouse at Lower Cosmeston Farm; obsolete buildings and structures, such as the many mansions and castles found in the Vale of Glamorgan, were seen as a cheap and convenient source of dressed stone and were often robbed during antiquity.
It was not until the late 18th and early 19th Centuries however that a detailed map of the Cosmeston area was produced, which clearly show the house and associated buildings pretty much as they are today. This particular building does indeed seem to contain at least three hearths, or fireplaces, and is almost certainly the same dwelling referenced in the Hearth Tax Assessment.
Records tell us that a family with the surname of Hawker resided at Lower Cosmeston farm throughout the 19th Century, and probably throughout the 18th Century also. One of the earliest names to appear on the census records is that of one John Hawker who died in aged It is likely that John was born at Lower Cosmeston farm in around the year Please note that this building is on private land on a working farm and is not accessible to the general public.

Bermuda’s Parliamentary Election Act restricted voter rights specifically to male property owners only. December 23, Reginald Fessenden transmitted intelligible speech by electronic waves from Cobb Island in the Potomac River. With his Bermudian connections, he was a father of radio. A Bermuda Parliamentary Election Amendment Act confirmed that the right to vote in general elections and the eligibility to run as candidates for the House of Assembly were limited to property-owning males.
On the surface, this appeared to be a conservative male reaction to the earlier unsuccessful attempts in and to give females the same voting rights as men. However, when the Women’s Property Act was enacted shortly thereafter, it gave qualifying male property owners the exclusive right to use their wives’ property to qualify for the vote.

Great atmosphere, so-so food We visited Rivo lounge in the early evening of Good Friday. There were only a few places to choose from in central Chippenham at this time that seemed suitable for a young family. Having been to a number of Rivo’s sister lounges in and around Cardiff, this looked like a familiar and welcoming spot for our evening meal. As a venue, this place is great!
The main room on the ground floor is roomy, quirky and larger upstairs room is a buzzy space, being cosy and sparky at the same time. The usual mix of eclectic furniture sets a good vibe, along with the well-pitched background music. The kids were entertained by colouring and board games provided. All good so far! The menu had all the usual lounge favourites, like a more-assured bar menu. Seeing as they were fairly busy on an early Friday night, the service was quick, friendly and very good.
When the food arrived, it was a slightly disappointing mixed bag. Portion sizes were on the small side. Yes I know we ordered tapas, but compared to other lounges, they were small.
Very tasty breakfast
